I live in ventura california and am strongly considering moving to Bend. Just wondering if there is anybody out there who made similar move and how they're liking or not liking the transition.

Bend and Redmond are the two fastest growing areas in Oregon. Redmond needs a by-pass, and Bend's so-called by-pass is merely a glorified truck route through the middle of town. That being said, there are many areas outside the city limits that have wonderful homesites. Southeast of Bend is an area along Arnold Ice Cave Road that has nice 5 and 10-acre parcels. Powell Butte east of Redmond has some nice developments. Sisters is getting too congested for my tastes...a rather artsy community that becomes clogged on weekends. However, it is a great jump-off point for some great areas of the Cascades (especially McKenzie Pass). Hope you find a nice place to put down roots...just don't be surprised when there are days when you feel like you never left SoCal! |

Bend and Redmond are two different places entirely.
Bend is a more liberal, hippie-like, trendy community with wine bars and natural food restaurants. The prices of homes are skyrocketing, and the community is booming. Redmond is like an overgrown truck stop where you can see high-riding pickup trucks, horse trailers, and "GW" signs all over. People who can't afford to live in Bend anymore live here, as well as those who just don't like those "hippie types" or those who just want a large chunk of horse pasture. You'd never know they're only a few minutes apart. Sisters has been redeveloped into a "old-west" style town, and has really become a tourist attraction (for reasons I haven't figured out yet). Central Oregon is the mountain biking, rock climbing, golf, and powder skiing capital of the Northwest. It's often called the "Playground of the Northwest". I can't live there - love to visit though. I miss the smell of grass, flowers, and even dirt when I spend too much time over there. -----------------------------------------------------------
