Hi. My wife and I will be in Portland, both for the first time, in late August. The catch is we'll only be there for about 30 hours, as we're then taking Amtrak up to Seattle, spending a couple days there, and then cruising to Alaska.
We're staying downtown near Pioneer Courthouse Square and won't have a car. So -- given our short amount of time, and never having been there before, what are the top things we should see? We've been told Powell's Books. We also would like to go to the International Rose Test Garden -- is it feasible to get there without a car? (I see there are some bus options but none look overly convenient.) We generally like to explore neighborhoods, parks, waterfront areas, etc -- just about anything, though minimal on museums unless they are particularly unique/significant.
Thanks for your help!
