Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste SA, the operator of nine Mexican airports, plans to spend US150 million to add a new terminal and runway to its airport in the resort city of Cancun, the Transportation and Communications Secretariat said in an e-mailed statement on Monday.
The Mexico City-based company, known as Asur, will spend US100 million to build a third terminal at the Cancun airport and US50 million for a second runway that can handle Boeing 777 airplanes, the secretariat said. The two runways will be far enough apart to allow simultaneous operation, according to the statement.
The construction will begin on Tuesday in an event with Transportation and Communications Secretary Pedro Cerisola and Fernando Chico Pardo, chairman of Asur, the secretariat said.
The airport's control tower and navigation systems were damaged from Hurricane Wilma and operations were halted for over a week following the storm's impact in late October. Repairs have been made and normal operations have been resumed in the last month, however.
