A new charter airline begins serving Ottawa today with weekly flights to sun destinations.
Sunwing Airlines, based in Toronto, will offer three weekly flights from Ottawa---a Thursday departure to Cuba, and Friday flight to Cancun, Mexico and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Its first flight, to Varadero, departs Ottawa tonight. The airline flies Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, each seating about 150 passengers.
Sunwing is an airline fashioned on the same business principles as Ottawa's Zoom Airlines. Parent company Sunwing Travel Group decided to form its own airline to carry its package tour vacationers, just as Go Travel Direct created Zoom as its exclusive carrier.
In fact, John Spinks of the Ottawa Airport Authority credits Zoom with igniting a surge in winter charter flights out of Ottawa to meet "the pent-up demand in Ottawa to get away for the winter."
During the peak months of February and March, 40 charters will be leaving Ottawa each week for sunny destinations.
Sunwing flights include many of the luxury touches which major carriers no longer offer, such as complimentary hot meals with wine, free headsets for movies and in-flight entertainment and a complimentary welcome glass of champagne.
Sunwing's flights will continue into April.
